Frequently Asked Questions

about breathwork, breath work and breathing techniques

WHAT IS BREATHWORK AND BREATH WORK?

Breathwork is a series of inhalations and exhalations, consciously guided through the mouth through active and passive cycles to find clarity of our conscious and deep insight on our emotional feelings. This conscious hyperventilation is used because Breathwork eliminates more carbon dioxide than the body can produce. This leads to hypocapnia, a reduced concentration of carbon dioxide dissolved in the blood. Breathwork can be practiced fast or slow.

Breath Work refers to breathing techniques, foundations or training the breath. For example, box breath or 4-7-8 breathing technique.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?

No, you don't! Breathwork is for all levels! I take time in listening to client needs, concerns and wants. Each experience is intentional in providing a safe and gentle space. Sometimes this means easing into breathwork sessions or visiting breathing foundations. I make sure our clients have all the tools and knowledge needed to have a successful breathwork session on their terms because ultimately your body knows where it wants to go!

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A BREATHWORK SESSION?

Our breathwork at Grounded In Color uses a Breath Guidance style. Our facilitator guides access to connect with the conscious in a gentle and kind manner. We start with gentle techniques, move into peaks and then come back down gently. We provide a safe space whether it is virtual online or in person. In addition, there may be added modalities such as sound healing, music, energy healing or props for comfort like blankets and bolsters.

CAN I DO BREATHWORK ON MY OWN?

Yes, however, it is recommended to find a facilitator to guide you during breathwork. Sometimes the body may experience involuntary actions such as clawing of the hands or emotional releases. A experienced facilitator will help guide during those actions and provide a safe space to be in.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOING BREATHWORK IN PERSON AND ONLINE?

Breathwork is a self healing practice, and can be guided both online and in-person. The main difference between the two is that when I offer private sessions in person I add in other supportive tools such as sound healing.

WHAT IS BREATHWORK GOOD FOR?

HOW DOES BREATHWORK WORK ON A EMOTIONAL LEVEL?

Often, we create a buildup of unreleased emotions such as anger, grief, anxiety, fear, frustration, etc. Many of us suppress our feelings for years and, in many cases, since childhood. We spend our entire lives trying to keep our emotions under control. Sooner or later, we will feel the adverse effects of repressed emotional states. Breathwork allows emotional release of those emotions and brings them to the surface.

Breathwork is practiced to achieve an altered state of consciousness. The altered states can range from expanding personal perspectives and perceptions all the way to spiritual breakthroughs. Many people practice breathwork to access states of healing, such as releasing trauma, dealing with grief, facing fears and tapping into deeper purpose for their life. Some common benefits include circulating physical and energetic blockages such as an injury or experience, releasing emotional baggage to feel lighter, gaining a clearer insight into particular situations or life general, allowing vulnerability and openness to be accessed, feeling connection to consciousness, expanding awareness of self like connecting with heart space. Breathwork is one of the most transformational and practices around, however, it is not for everyone.
